Depoe Bay is a tiny beach town on the Oregon Coast that is the very best place to catch sight of the gray whales in the summer. A pod of resident whales makes their home here 10 months out of the year and the summer months are the best time to see them feeding in the bay.
The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department operates a good size whale watching center and they monitor the populations of resident and migrating whales throughout the year. Already they have had 115 sightings of whales in July. August is typically the best month. Check out their website for the daily counts and more information.
Several operators provide whale watching boat tours that take visitors out to scenic coves and up close with the whales.
Seals, sea lions and otters can also be spotted around the area.
